Molecular Diagnostics

At the end of this course, students should be able to: 
1. Discuss the fundamentals of nucleic acid biochemistry: DNA, RNA, and Proteins
2. Explain common techniques in molecular biology: nucleic acid extraction methods; resolution and detection of nucleic acids; analysis and characterization of nucleic acids and proteins; nucleic acid amplification; chromosomal structure and mutations; gene mutations; and DNA sequencing
3. Discuss techniques in the clinical lab: DNA polymorphisms and human identifications; detection and identification of microorganisms; molecular detection of inherited diseases; molecular oncology; DNA-based tissue typing; and quality assurance and quality control in the molecular lab
