At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Evaluate Wright’s stained smears of peripheral blood, bone marrow and body fluids, differentiating and identifying the cells, cellular inclusions, and some microorganisms, and recognize the need for pathologist assistance in identification of some abnormal cells.
2. Evaluate Wright’s stained smears and EDTA blood samples for artifacts.
3. Visually interpret the stain results for supravital stains, cytochemical stains, and iron stain on peripheral blood and bone marrow.
4. Interpret immunophenotype and/or molecular genetic results to determine cell type and identify the most common hematopoietic neoplasms.
5. Interpret laboratory test results to diagnose and classify Hematopoietic Neoplasms in the WHO Classification terminology.
6. Interpret laboratory test results to diagnose and differentiate anemias, thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies.
