At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. The primary goal of the bacteriology lecture series is to develop a knowledge of clinical mycology to include the processing and identification of saprophytic and pathogenic fungi with considerations on:
• Proper identification of clinical specimens using established patient / specimen verification protocols and recognizing the need to perform all testing of the mold fungi under strict protocols to eliminate the contamination of other cultures with the certain fungi.
• Knowledge of the proper collection sites and techniques for different fungal infections and the selection of the appropriate media and the incubation temperature/s for the various pathogenic fungi.
• Identification of saprophytic fungi, common pathogenic mold fungi, yeast and systemic diphasic fungi with the appropriate precautions adhered to with the diphasic organisms.
