At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Compare and contrast culture methods, serologic tests results, and cytologic/pathologic findings in tissue for each virus discussed.
2. Interpret or predict serologic test results to determine the presence of and stage of infection (where appropriate) for each virus discusses.
3. Match specific viruses with their natural reservoirs, mode of transmission and clinical syndromes.
4. Summarize the need for yearly immunization against Influenza A virus.
5. Discuss vaccination for polio.
6. State the current recommendations regarding HPV screening in females of various age groups.
7. Discuss Variola virus as an agent of bioterrorism.
8. Indicate risk of infection for the viruses discussed based on geographic location, disease states, mode of transmission, and lifestyle choices.
9. Discuss spongiform encephalopathies and their association with prions.
10. Define PCR and contrast amplification techniques and hybrid nucleic acid detection methods.
11. Propose a laboratory design for PCR testing with attention to reduction of the possibility of contamination of the sample or end product.
12. Design oligonucleotide primers for PCR.
