At the end of this course, students should be able to:
Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection
1. Know how to collect and handle blood specimens for analysis and the differences between serum, plasma, and whole blood.
2. Know the safety precautions when collecting blood samples, universal (standard) precautions, and equipment safety to include sharps for needle disposal
3. Discuss procedures to prevent hemolysis
4. Describe how to collect blood in collecting tubes for analysis (clotted blood and anticoagulated blood) and employ proper order of draw when collecting blood in multiple types of vacuum tubes
5. Discuss anticoagulants, and know effects of improper anticoagulant use
6. Know procedure for blood culture collection
7. Know the proper labeling of blood tubes including sentinel event with blood bank arm bands
8. Explain infant blood collection through heel puncture
9. Discuss patient identification and their rights
10. Perform phlebotomy techniques: venipuncture (vacutainer and syringe), and skin puncture (heelsticks and fingersticks) for general labs; blood cultures, and blood bank.
11. Demonstrate the ability to read and understand written procedures
12. Utilizes supplies and equipment skillfully; demonstrates resourcefulness in troubleshooting and maintenance without direct supervision
13. Respond positively to constructive criticism; contribute to moral and rapport; communicate with members of the lab department and is easy to work with; admit mistakes and take actions to correct them; and do not rationalize or blame others.
14. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
15. Define medical terminology.
16. Describe the collection of ABG specimens.
Lab Management, Education Methodology, and Laboratory Information Systems
1. Discuss quality control necessary in the clinical laboratory
2. Discuss proficiency testing and appropriate corrective action
3. Understand the differences between accuracy and precision
4. Know quality improvement (TQM, CQI, PIC)
5. Know OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA regulations
6. Discuss universal (standard) precautions and safety
7. Discuss management to include, purchasing, inventory control, human resource management, time management, motivation, decision making, and communication.
8. Discuss laboratory education, certification, and evaluation
9. Understand laboratory computer systems
